Educating Your Child About Internet Safety

The internet is a wonderful place for children to learn and educate themselves, whether it’s looking at revision notes for an upcoming exam, or speaking with others through an online forum or another way of building a community. But there are ways where the internet can be a dangerous place for children if they’re not educated about the important ways of being safe.

In this guide from a prep school in Middlesex, we take a look at the ways to keep your child safe on the internet and how to properly educate them.

Tell them about what security measures you have in place

Make them aware of why there are certain places your child can’t go to online. Some places not only include bad language and terms that children shouldn’t be associated with, but there are also websites that should remain off limits to your child. Explain what happens if your child goes there and what the security in place does to protect them from it. All internet providers will offer this to ensure the safety of children as they access the internet.

Remind them that it’s not just about using a PC safely

When your child is old enough they’ll be using video games consoles and messenger services to communicate with their friends online – a usually very harmless activity. However, you should show your child how to be respectful online, whether it’s using a PC or when playing an online video game, as they too can also be mean to others they don’t know. Remind them to keep these activities between friends to have a safer and more enjoyable time online.

Direct them through the internet

Show them the safe places and the places they should avoid, help them along the path with their homework or revision methods. If you see something that doesn’t look right, then show your child what to do next. It’s a good habit to get into when your child is first getting used to the internet and is in need of direction. They’ll then be able to know what to look out for in the future.
