Light up a room with VELUX

Hey friends,

4 years ago we had our house extended and went from a 3 bed 1930’s detached house with front garden to a 5 bed house; with garage, office, laundry and downstairs toilet/shower room and front driveway.

We also extended to the side and built on our patio to take the kitchen from long galley style to a big open plan kitchen/diner.

We LOVE our house.

It was madness living on a building site with a 6 month old baby and I’m not sure now how we got through it! The mess was something else and I’m sure I still find builders dust 4 years later!

We had to make quick decisions every day it seemed, as a particular phase or problem came up. We made the best choices with the knowledge / budget we had at the time.

If I could change one thing it would be to flood the back of the house with more light, my kitchen in particular has real dark spots even with a bi-fold door with full length windows.

Light is good for the soul and seems scarce at the moment especially at this time of year where it is so dull and dreary.  It’s a well known fact that we need light to maintain good health in the winter.

A solution for this could have been VELUX roof lights, aswell as the bi-fold door.  VELUX is a Danish company that specializes in windows and skylights/ roof blinds.  They suit a modern new build or more traditional building and are successful in flooding a room with light with the comfort of being able to shut the blind easily.

Sometimes (because I love design) I look at design inspiration at the houses in London, for example.  I love how they successfully maximise space with light in older buildings that turn the family areas into modern spaces.  The VELUX roof light windows are part of the design and are functional too.

Just look at the difference between my kitchen and these spaces.  See my Pinterest inspiration board for more design ideas.

I was invited to an open house the other day in Stoke-Sub-Hamdon, a house very similar to ours in age and style which had also been extended and changed from the original format.  Immediately I noticed that the home had VELUX roof lights with electric blinds in the kitchen.

I am so impressed with the kitchen and I love how it makes the room so light, even in winter. It took me back to those decisions we made 4 years ago.

I wish I’d put more light into my home.  Do you have VELUX windows, roof lights or blinds in your home?

  1. I had a sense of deja vu reading your post as we too had our extension done 4 years ago, I don’t know how we coped with the mess, I remember having to make those rushed decisions and we still find the odd bit of building dust! Light really is important this time of year isn’t it. X

  2. we have a small velux in the kitchen which is essential really as otherwise we wouldn’t have much light – they definitely do make a difference.
